Checklists: What They Are Not

Checklists are not training tools. Period. Expecting checklist-compliance reflects the real condition of the vessel may lead to a series of boxes ticked without a genuine understanding. If proper mentorship and practical demonstrations does not become part of the culture, checklists can become mere rituals, failing to ensure safety and competence at sea.

What is Guide2Inspections?

What’s New With Navguide?

We are now in Singapore! Navguide Solutions (Singapore) Pte Ltd was formed in March 2025. We are officially in two countries now.

Guide2Inspections, our flagship Inspection-cum-mentorship app, underwent several upgrades. We added ‘tracking’ to identify the inspection times and user behavior on the app. Following our presentation at the IMO, we were honoured to be invited to present for the Maritime Trainers’ Guild on the organic upskilling of Seafarers at their Annual meet. Capt. Basu’s visit to the Singapore Maritime Week triggered several movements, including an interview by Carl King for the IMO and the inclusion of Capt Sartaj Gill, Former MD and Global Head of compliance at VGroup and OSM Thome, into our Global Advisory Board.

Lloyds Maritime Institute featured Capt. Basu as the Maritime Personality of the week, acknowledging Navguide’s contributions to the industry.

True Confidence Comes With Clarity

by Capt. Debashis Basu

Are text-based Standard Operating Procedures understood by all?

What does the industry say about this?

Well, in our recent LinkedIn Poll, all votes indicated that they are misunderstood quite often or the only option we have.

Well, it’s not the only option.

Confidence without clarity is a recipe for disaster. In a dark room, if you walk around with confidence, you are bound to have your toes stubbed. The clarity that our SOPs must provide cannot come from text instructions, which they often are. As in, I cannot explain to you how to tie a knot with text.

About four years back, we at Navguide Solutions explored the concept of visualizing checklists through microlearning, converting them into short three to five-minute well-researched videos that serve as engaging visual SOPs. These visually rich snippets enhance recall, making it easier for professionals to follow and execute their tasks accurately.

This isn't just theoretical; It has been adopted by leading companies worldwide and serves as a testament to our mission of constantly evolving the landscape of workplace training.
