SIRE2.0 & RISQ3.1: Ten Conceptual Changes

Inspections today are not just about ticking boxes — they are about understanding risks. The focus has shifted from hardware alone to understanding how people, systems, and processes collaborate on board. Inspectors now look at how the crew manages fatigue, leadership, and decision-making. Reports are digital, photographs are uploaded instantly, and every comment stays visible for months. Let’s discuss the fundamental concepts that has changed.

Addressing Seafarers

What’s New With Navguide?

September started with our presence in Manila, where we were invited by the MARINA to the Seafarers’ Human Rights Conference, thanks to our partners, the PTC Group. It was an honour to present before the MARINA and to attend the PTC Welcome dinner later that week. That was shortly followed by the INMEX Mumbai and the London International Shipping Week, and the massive LISW Gala Dinner. We then arrived in Singapore to present our concepts on behalf of the Nautical Institute. The SSA Gala dinner was the icing on the cake, thanks to the thoughtful invitation from Mr Anshul. It was an honour to be invited to a podcast by Capt. Amresh [Seafarers’ Global] and to address seafarers on a national scale.

60-second insights

The Checklist read: “The Pilot ladder must be tied to a strong point with a rolling hitch!” OK. I only knew What to do, not How.

I then went to Bosun. Bosun showed me how to tie a rolling hitch and how to identify a strong point. Then I knew How to do it. Not the Why.

Why a rolling hitch? Why not a clove hitch or timber hitch? Why a Strong point? Why can’t I tie it to a railing? Who will teach me that?

How should the effectiveness of training be measured?

1. By how many people are trained | 2. How much money is spent

3. Do the trainees like it? | 4. Measurable performance outcome

How Smart Tech Works

by Capt. Debashis Basu

What is technology meant for?

We all have myths and misconceptions. By and large, it does not affect others. But when decision makers in an industry have myths, money flows in the wrong direction.

One such myth is that: The Young Generation is impressed by technology!

No, they are not. Have you ever realised that any technology impresses you only if you have lived in the era before it existed? My two-year-old son will never know a world where he cannot see his father on the phone. Tech? NO! That’s just how phones work! Just because we are spending millions behind AI, AR, VR or 3D, it does not mean it will be interesting or even used. Storyboarding— What is the world it transports you to? That is far more important than the tech piece.

Technology always had just one job! In every era, technology was meant to make things easy for you. In today's world, apps like Uber have made it easy to call a cab, so you will never again go looking for one on the streets. Amazon has made shopping instinctive—you look for ratings even in a supermarket. That’s what Billion Dollar Apps Do! When created with true empathy, they can change the behaviour of an entire generation!

Is there an app, created with a similar thought process, that makes shipboard work simple? Well, yes, there is now!
